About Caldwell Opportunities

Mission Statement

The mission of Caldwell Opportunities, Inc., is to provide developmental and vocational services to adults with disabilities who live in Caldwell County area in order to maximize independence and employment.

History

Caldwell Opportunities, Inc. is located in Lenoir, NCCaldwell Opportunities, Inc. was organized by the Arc of Caldwell County in 1969. In 1970, it became part of Foothills Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities, and Substance Abuse Program (FAP).

The program was established to provide a continuum of services for adults with disabilities, once they aged out of public school. The mission is to promote employment and independence of persons with disabilities through customer/business/community partnerships and leadership. Due to diversion of state funding, Foothills Area Program indicated they were going to put out Request for Proposals to any and all providers to assume operation of Caldwell Opportunities.

The parents, consumers and staff felt concerned citizens of Caldwell County should operate this program, and took actions to transfer the operation of Caldwell Opportunities to a private, non –profit board. This board organized, acquired 501 c (3) status; registered articles of incorporation and by-laws, and submitted a proposal to Foothills Area Program for assumption of operation of COI.

The Foothills Area Board of Directors transferred operation of programs to COI based upon ability of the COI Board to show financial solvency July 1, 2002.

Caldwell Opportunities, Inc. is funded by the NC Department of Vocational Rehabilitation, a contract with Smoky Mountain Center (Local Management Entity), community donations, grants and workshop revenue.
